REACTIONS to making sexual harassment in the workplace an offence have
been mixed. Employers have protested, women’s groups have welcomed the move, but with a caveat. And one expert has suggested making it an occupational safety offence.

Thavalingam Thavarajah is against codifying sexual harassment.

Maimunah Aminuddin says sexual harassment is not only confined to women.
The Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) protested because it feels the Code of Practice on the Prevention and Eradication of Sexual Harassment in the Workplace, and the Penal Code are sufficient.

Women’s groups feel there is a greater need for specific legislation that covers sexual harassment in all places and not just at work.

Human resources specialist Maimunah Aminuddin, who co-authored A Guide to the Malaysian Code of Practice on Sexual Harassment in the Workplace with former Labour Department director general Datuk Tengku Omar Tengku Bot, said codifying sexual harassment will not solve the problem.

“When there is a law prohibiting something, evidence would need to be adduced for the wrongdoing to be proven. In sexual harassment cases, it’s usually just one person’s word against the other’s,” said Maimunah.
She said sexual harassment is already a misconduct, like tardiness or an act of betrayal against the company, and case law has shown that courts side with the employer for dismissing an employee for sexual harassment.

Maimunah said she is against incorporating sexual harassment under the Employment Act because “employers may be fined for failure to comply with the Employment Act (EA), but at this point in time at least the EA has no provisions for punishment of individual employees or harassers.”

She feels sexual harassment should be placed under the Occupational Safety and Health Act (Osha) 1994.

“This would mean that all employees would be covered, unlike placing it under the Employment Act which only applies to the private sector in the peninsula, and only to complainants who earn below RM1,500.

“The ministry can place one section under Osha that requires all employers to adopt and implement the current Code of Practice,” she said.

This, said Maimunah, would allow the Department Of Occupational Safety and Health (Dosh) to ask the company during inspections to produce evidence that it had implemented the code.

“The company can do this by providing training calendars and manuals on sexual harassment, as well as the setting up of a committee made up of those who have been properly trained to investigate such complaints,” she said.

Also, the fines for non-compliance under Osha are much higher than those under the EA. And it will cover third party contractors like consultants and contract workers, she added.

She said both men and women need to be educated on how painful and harmful sexual harassment can be.

“Most people will think there is no harm in dirty jokes, or making comments about another’s body shape, or even what one did with one’s husband the night before. So people have to speak out against this.

“If the point is clearly made that the behaviour is offensive and the harasser continues, the employee should bring it to the attention of the employer. Otherwise, the harasser is under the impression that what he is doing is acceptable.”

She added that sexual harassment is not confined to women.

“When I conduct training, many Muslim men tell me that if a woman wears sexy clothes to work, they feel sexually harassed. They say it is a distraction, they don’t know where to put their eyes and they cannot concentrate on their work. We need to be able to talk about what causes hurt to other people,” she said.

“Employees have to be educated to the fact that they have the right not to be sexually harassed and that they have to complain when it does happen.

“This education has to be at all levels, and the Human Resources Ministry has to play its role by getting other parties to play their role. It should be made mandatory for companies to have a minimum number of hours of training on this every year.”

Lawyer Thavalingam Thavarajah is against codifying sexual harassment because it may result in rigidity, and certain acts may not be included.

“But if it’s already an implied misconduct, then the range is a lot wider. Case law seems to favour this,” he said.

Thavalingam has written about employment law and he is the honorary secretary of MEF.

Like Maimunah, Thavalingam stresses the need for education.

“We need to educate people on their rights. They need to know exactly what sexual harassment is. They don’t read acts of parliament.

“If a guy has a nude picture of a woman on his wall or as a screen saver, that also is sexual harassment. Offending email and pornographic short messages can also amount to sexual harassment, as they outrage a person’s modesty to a certain extent.

“The trouble here is that people look at this lightly or they don’t realise they have an avenue of complaint, or even that they are a victim of sexual harassment.”

JOHOR BARU: A teacher was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly molesting a nine-year boy at his tuition centre in Taman Melodies here.

He is believed to have been doing this for the past year.

The boy’s mother, who wanted to be identified as Ah Fang, 32, said a friend of her son told her on Oct 31 that she did not want to attend classes at the tuition centre as the teacher had molested her.

“As soon as my son came back from his tuition class about 6pm that day, my husband and I asked him if he had experienced any problems with the teacher,” Ah Fang said at the state MCA complaints bureau yesterday.

“He said the teacher often forced him to strip and lie on a table with his eyes closed and was then asked to caress the teacher’s genitals until he ejaculated. This took place in the class room after the other students had left.
“My son said the teacher threatened to punish him if he told anyone about what had taken place.

“He also told us the teacher had wanted my son to perform oral sex on him but my son refused,” Ah Fang said, adding that the last incident was on Oct 29.

“I am extremely upset and disgusted with the teacher’s actions.”

She said the teacher often sent her son, who is the eldest of her three children home late after classes.

Also present was state MCA complaints bureau deputy chief Rodney Soon.

Ah Fang said she lodged a report at the Johor Baru (South) police district headquarters on Sunday.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Zainuddin Yaacob said a man had been arrested and remanded for five days.

AN urban legend has it that a onetime minister who enjoyed a hilarious Instant Cafe Theatre show jokingly asked the comedic troupe if “they were scared of Kamunting”, a discreet reference to the detention centre for the subversive in Taiping, Perak.

Amerul (left) and Bob.

As an answer to his question, the Cafe’s latest offering, Kurang Manis, recently began with this announcement: “All characters portrayed are purely fictional, including those with an uncanny resemblance to VIPs”.

Kurang Manis, staged at The Actors Studio in Kuala Lumpur from Oct 29 to Nov 2, marked the return of the stand-up troupe which excels in parodying Malaysian political life after a four-year hiatus.

Focusing on “the last days, the new dawn, the final hiccup and the never-ending story”, Kurang Manis starred both the old and brand new.

Newcomers Alex Subryn Luis, Amerul Affendi, Ayam (Fareed Jamaluddin), Azrul Zaidi, Chew Kin Wah, Gan Hui Yee, Tria Aziz, Zahiril (Bob) Adzim and Zalfian Fuzi joined veterans Jo Kukathas, Shanthini Venugopal, Edwin Sumun and Maya Tan Abdullah in parodying the latest developments in the politics of Bolehland, in the Cafe’s trade-mark, no-holds-barred style.
Kurang Manis centred on daily life in the “new, post-March 8″ Bolehland where its voters wait for “the next explosive instalment” while indulging in various local pastimes: shooting crows, playing mahjong, holding candlelight vigils for detainees and bloggers, and logging onto the Internet to find out what is going on (be they fact or hearsay).

This time, the Cafe’s team combined its vintage sketches and pop parodies with screenings of, among others, a Pacman video game and transcripts of a cyber-chatroom conversation.

The cleverly-done video game substituted the Pacman character with that of a prominent cabinet minister and the “monsters” with that of an opposition MP and a blogger icon.

Alex, better known as rock singer Ryn, and Audition champion Tria, made full use of their musical talents to dish out brilliant parodies of Hotel California, Besame Mucho and Mamma Mia!, which ribbed most major political and public figures, to a roaring crowd.

In their musical acts, they were more than assisted by seasoned veterans Venugopal, Maya, Kukathas and Sumun.

Tria proved that she was cut-out for stand-up comedy in the acts Dial A Bomoh, which poked fun at bomoh and makers of porn VCDs, and Alternative Clinic, which parodied, among others, sodomy allegations, the Bersih rally and fiction-writing in a leading Bahasa daily.

Azrul of Raja Lawak fame also shone at portraying “gatecrashers” or “spoilers” in most of the sketches. He was natural as a “tear-gasser” in Alternative Clinic, and the perfect foil to Chew’s “sucker-upper” in Crow Hunters, a tale of two politically-inclined crow shooters from City Hall.

Amerul and Bob, who first attained fame in the Cafe’s acclaimed play Air Con written by Shanon Shah, showed their hilarious out-of-this-world side in Da Bomb, a sketch about a “suicide bomber for hire” company headed by two Taliban wannabes.

The duo were joined by Gan of Animal Farm fame, who was irritatingly entertaining as a depressed grandmother who wanted to “go off with a bang”.

Bob, whose villain character in Kami - The Movie has been noted as one of the year’s most despicable, also stole the show as a man afflicted by political sloganeering in Alternative Clinic, and an effeminate coffee boy in the showcase’s crowning sketch, The Return of the Toymaker.

Long-locked Ayam did great, too, as the Malaysianised version of Narnia’s lion king, Aslan, in The Return of the Toymaker, and a kris-wielding Hang Tuah wannabe in Da Bomb.

Of the veterans, Kukathas made full use of her classic “nasty minister” disguise to whip up a crazy and zany interview session with Sumun.

She also shined as a “nasty judge” who made life hell for an idealistic lawyer played by Zalfian, and the creepy and menacing Toymaker in The Return of the Toymaker.

Sumun proved to be the gang’s “master of disguise”. He portrayed, to the delight of the audience, roles as diverse as a gorgeous model, a sleepy emperor, a permanently sick patient and case-fixing politician.

Instant Cafe Theatre turns 18 this year, and its latest stand-up act shows it remains the king in political parodies.

Raunchy, weird and madly funny Avenue Q stars puppets and humans tackling all-too-real life situations together. SHARMILA BILLOT entered into the spirit of things at the showing in The Esplanade Theatre in Singapore.

A scene from Avenue Q.

TONY Award-winning Broadway show Avenue Q is raunchy and hilarious.

It is not your typical puppet show. Although the puppets are Sesame Street-inspired, make no mistake: the show is pretty much an “adult” show.

It had the audience in stitches throughout its performance the night this reviewer caught it at The Esplanade Theatre in Singapore. (It began on Oct 30 and runs until Nov 16.)

The story begins with Princeton coming to the street in New York City looking for an apartment. He’s a college graduate with an English degree, but with no skills or career plans.
Pretty soon, he meets the rest of the cast - his soon-to-be girlfriend Kate Monster; Brian and his Japanese fiance Christmas Eve, who are unemployed and rather bizarre; goofy Nicky and his closet gay Republican roommate Rod; building superintendent Gary Coleman (yes, that Gary Coleman, although here played by a woman); and the uncouth, porn-loving Trekkie Monster.

That is where the humour comes in, as these characters face real-life grown-up problems.

It’s a place where humans live side by side with puppets and monsters, and nobody thinks it’s strange.

The show is a good-natured story about a young man finding himself, and love, in the rocky world of young adulthood.

The performers are all fantastic, with the standout being Carla Guevara-Laforteza as the voices of Kate Monster and the aptly named Lucy the S**t.

Carla’s voice is clear and musical and she’s a joy to listen to. Lead actor Felix Rivera gives just as good in the challenging roles of Princeton and Rod.

It’s quite amazing to see the puppeteer switching speaking voices between such radically different characters in mere seconds, but that’s the incredible talent portrayed by the actors and actresses of the show.

It’s strange at first to see puppets with humans walking around, giving them their voices. You don’t know who to concentrate on initially. The furry characters’ actions or the puppeteers’ as the puppeteers are equally funny with their facial expressions.

But after some time, the weirdness passes, and by then, the audience is into the highly entertaining show.

This show is X-rated as puppet sex scenes are shown and foul language is used.

With songs like The Internet Is For Porn, It Sucks To Be Me and I’m Not Wearing Underwear Today, the cast regularly breaks into song to relay their emotions.

On the whole, Avenue Q is riotous fun. It’s also very real in terms of dealing with the harsh realities of life. A lot of people would easily relate to the story.

Avenue Q opened off-Broadway four years after it was written by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx (music) and Jeff Whitty (the book).

The show picked up momentum during its run and was transferred to the Golden Theatre in New York’s Broadway district in 2003.

Not long after, it picked the 2003 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding New Musical, and in the following year picked up three Tony Awards (Best Musical, Best Score, Best Book).

It has played in the United Kingdom, Mexico, France, Israel and Russia.

Avenue Q is presented by Singapore Repertory Theatre (SRT) and VizPro Entertainment.

Tickets are priced from S$40 to S$140 (student concessions and group discounts are available). A limited number of S$15 tickets are available for the first seven shows to celebrate SRT’s 15th anniversary.

For ticketing information, visit www.sistic.com.sg or www.srt.com.sg

KUALA LUMPUR: Two technicians, both aged 20, were yesterday charged separately at the Sessions Court with raping a 15-year-old girl.

The two men are alleged to have committed the offence before abandoning her at the Christian cemetery in Jalan Kuari, Cheras, between 11pm and midnight on June 30 last year.

Mohd Hafiz Mohammad and Muhammad Najmi Abiddin pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Najmi was also charged with forcing the girl into performing oral sex on him.

He was also accused of stealing her Nokia handphone, worth RM150, at the same place and time.
Deputy public prosecutor Mohd Hafiz Mohd Yusoff urged the court to deny them bail due to the gravity of the offences.

“The accused know where the victim lives.”

Their counsel, Shahrul Nizam Azwir, pleaded for bail and urged judge Mohd Nasir Nordin to impose a reasonable amount.

“Both the accused are still young and it would not be appropriate to place them in prison (under remand).

“They will also lose their jobs in the event they are denied bail.”

Hafiz told the court he was the third among eight siblings while Najmi said he was the eldest of four children.

Nasir granted Hafiz RM10,000 bail in one surety and Najmi RM15,000 bail in one surety.

He warned the two not to harass the victim. He fixed June 11 and 12 for hearing.

PARIS - Pregnant women should keep consumption of coffee, tea and cola to a minimum, according to a study published on Monday that sees a link between caffeine intake and low birth weight among babies.

British researchers recruited 2,635 women at between eight and 12 weeks of pregnancy, asked them about their dietary habits and monitored them for caffeine in their saliva at checkups.

Women who took between 100 and 199 milligrams of caffeine per day faced a 20 per cent increased risk of having a baby with a relatively lower birth weight

compared with counterparts whose intake was less than 100 mg per day.

For those who had an intake of 200-299 mg per day, the risk rose to 40 per cent, and for those over 300 mg per day, it was 50 per cent.

Birth weight is a widely used benchmark of health, especially for diabetes and heart disease.

An average cup of coffee contains about 100 mg of caffeine and tea about half this amount, although the concentration varies according to the strength of brew and the brand of the product.

Caffeine is also present in cola, chocolate, coca and some drugs.

The so-called CARE study, published online by the British Medical Journal, said “sensible advice” would be for women to reduce caffeine intake before conception and throughout pregnancy.

Previous research has found that caffeine easily crosses the placenta into the foetus, although the evidence for low birth weight has also been inconclusive and muddied by factors such as smoking and alcohol consumption.

This is the first study that also sees a link in tea, which comprised 60 per cent of the caffeine consumed by the women.

On its website, Britain’s Food Standards Agency (FSA) said it was cutting its recommended maximum intake of caffeine for pregnant women to 200 mg per day –the rough equivalent of two mugs of coffee — from 300 mg in the light of the study.

“This new advice doesn’t mean that pregnant women have to cut out caffeine completely, simply that they should be careful and make sure they don’t have too much. We would emphasise that the risks are likely to be very small,” said the FSA’s chief scientist, Andrew Wadge. - AFP/ar

SINGAPORE : Get ready for ‘Puppets Gone Wild’ with “Avenue Q”, a fresh, lightweight musical featuring a colourful cast of X-rated puppets and human actors. Those who grew up with “Sesame Street” will enjoy the storyline that’s as elementary as A-B-C. But the adult themes explored in this Tony Award winning hit musical are not suitable for the true “Sesame Street” audience. So this is another good excuse for your night out, folks.

You get to meet Princeton, the main character who is a financially drained, fresh college graduate who moves to Avenue Q, in New York City as he searches for his purpose in life.

Through a tickling series of song and dance, you’ll be introduced to the other characters such as Kate Monster the hopeless romantic kindergarten teaching assistant, Rod the effeminate Republican investment banker, Nicky the jobless roommate of Rod, Trekkie Monster the Internet porn fan and sexy cabaret singer, Lucy the Slut.

Just like in “Sesame Street”, the puppets interact with human characters which include Brian the not-so-funny standup comedian, Christmas Eve the stereotypical Asian-American therapist and Gary Coleman the former child-star, now, superintendent.

The wise-cracking musical numbers written and composed by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marz will keep you humming to catchy tunes such as “It Sucks To Be Me”, “Everyone’s A Little Bit Racist”, “The Internet Is For Porn”, “I’m Not Wearing Underwear Today” and “There’s A Fine Fine Line”.

Unlike ‘The Muppets’, the audiences can openly observe the handlers as they score to successfully juggle, act, sing and maneuver their respective puppets. Some may think them as distractions, but I found myself occasionally shifting my attention from puppets to the animated facial expressions and movements of the performers, for extra entertainment.

Felix Rivera who is the man behind both Princeton and Rod did an amazing job. He could not only seamlessly switch puppets but was able to move from character voices of Princeton to nasally Rod with ease.

Credit also goes to Carla Guevera-Laforteza who can touch your heart with the sweet voice of Kate Monster in one minute and then flirt with the raspy, sultry voice of Lucy the Slut.

It was too bad though, that Frenchie Dy (Christmas Eve) had her exaggerated Japanese accent lost in translation. I struggled to make out what she was trying to say and you can bet I wasn’t the only one who couldn’t understand her.

Thanks to the nature of the show, the puppets get away with very graphic sex and nudity. Without giving too much away, I honestly thought that was the best part of the entire show. With the audience cheering for more it was no surprise that the Philippine production directed by Bobby Garcia rewarded the cast and production team with a standing ovation at its opening night presentation.

With all the ballyhoo and promises, “Avenue Q” definitely delivered two hours of fun, frothy rudeness and unstoppable laughter - satisfaction guaranteed.

FOR over 70 years, women all over the world have relied on pads and tampons to take care of their menstrual needs.

But now, a new invention is promising to empower women to live life to the fullest everyday of the month, no wings or strings at t a c h e d .

The Instead Softcup is said to replace all other menstrual care and protection products.

Launched last week in Malaysia, the Softcup is a clean and convenient SALTWATER nasal sprays, warm compresses and other do-it-yourself remedies can help lessen the misery of inflamed sinuses, according to experts at the Mayo Clinic.

Writing in the Mayo Clinic Women’s HealthSource, they detail some of the steps people can take on their own to battle sinusitis.

Sinusitis refers to inflammation in the sinuses, the air-filled cavities that surround the nose and nasal passages.

Symptoms include pain and pressure in the forehead, cheeks and area around the eyes; nasal congestion and discharge; ear pain; and reduced sense of taste and smell.

Sinusitis often begins when a cold, which is caused by a virus, leads to inflammation in the lining of the sinuses.

Sometimes, this leads to a bacterial infection, which then creates a longer bout of sinusitis-last - ing longer than 10 to 14 days.

Other causes of sinusitis include allergies, a deviation in the wall between the nostrils (deviated septum) and harmless growths called nasal p o l y p s.

Sinusitis caused by a virus typically clears up on its own. But when symptoms last longer than 10 to 14 days, a secondary bacterial infection is often the culprit, according to the exper ts.

In such cases, antibiotics may be necessary. There are, however, simple do-it-yourself methods for easing sinusitis misery.

One measure is to use saline (saltwater) washes or sprays to flush out the nasal passages, removing thick secretions and allowing the sinuses to drain.

Drinking plenty of fluids also helps drain the sinus cavities by diluting m u c u s.

A little warmth may also help. This can mean “steaming” the sinuses by covering your head with a towel as you breathe in steam from a bowl of hot water, or placing warm, damp towels on the face, over the sinus cavi t i e s.

Finally, avoid drinking and smoking.

Alcohol can worsen the swelling in the sinus cavities, while cigarette smoke - including secondhand smoke — further irritates the nasal passages. - Reuter s method of feminine hygiene.

How does it work? The menstrual flow comes out of the uterus through a very small opening in the cervix.

The rim of the cup is lodged between the pubic bone and the back of the vagina.

It collects the menstrual flow internally and is designed to fit easily and comfor tably.

It has the capacity to hold twice as much menstrual flow compared to tampons and offers a maximum wear of up to 12 hours.

It’s also said to reduce dampness, reduce odour and allow normal physical activities such as swimming, running, traveling and even sexual intercour se.

“Softcup is entering a new horizon in its bid to make ladies more comfor table.

“But in the Malaysian setting, to insert something into the vagina is something alien to our culture.

“However, women need to conquer their fear and try to be comfortable,” says deputy health minister Datuk Dr Abdul Latiff Ahmad.

The product has already made waves in Hong Kong and China and it’s going to be introduced in more than 30 countries over the next few years.

Certified sexuality educator, counsellor, researcher and secretary general of the World Association for Sexual Health Dr Beverly Whipple says the Softcup is absolutely necessary and that there’s simply no two ways about it.

“For 70 years, women who used tampons have had to live with the fear of toxic shock syndrome (TSS).

“Those who used sanitary pads risked health ailments from the dioxin used in the sanitary pads.

“Better absorbent tampons and pads don’t necessarily mean that it’s better for women. The use of these menstrual care products has raised some health concerns “W h at ’s unique about this product is that it collects, and doesn’t absorb.

“It also gives women the freedom to swim, fly, travel, take part in sporting activities and even have sexual intercourse.” Laboratory studies, she says, have shown that the Softcup doesn’t promote the growth of bacteria.

Consultant obstetrician and gynaecological oncologist Datuk Dr Abdul Aziz says women should be aware of their anatomy.

“I’ve heard stories of school girls thinking they’re going to bleed to death when they get their period.

“Some think that their cervix is in their chest, others think their uterus is behind their spleen.

But let’s not talk just about women, men are even worse when it comes to knowing their anatomy.” There needs to be continuous education and publicity, he says, so that women do not fear probing into their anatomy.

“In 1982, when I was practicing, women never wanted to open up and tell me what was wrong with them. They expected me to g u e s s.

“But now, they walk into my office with a whole list of problems that they want me to fix.

“Malaysian women are beginning to understand their bodies better.” It is timely, he says, that a safe alternative for menstrual protection is introduced in Malaysia.

“Having received feedback and observed the use of the product among women, it is found to be not harmful to women’s internal tissues and doesn’t promote infection.

“There is no age limitations on its use and it is suitable for all women, even virgins.

“The human vagina is very accommodating.

“If a woman knows how to relax and feel comfortable with herself, there won’t be any problem in inserting this new product.” Although Dr Abdul Aziz hasn’t seen any woman who has suffered from TSS, he says that it’s very possible.

“It can happen. Menses is an excellent food for bacteria. Although bacteria plays its part in controlling the acidity level of the vagina, it can also be absorbed into the body’s c i r c u l at i o n .

“Many women who come to me complain about losing their tampons. Usually while taking out the tampon, they accidentally snap the thread. It’s very common.” He says the Softcup eliminates that problem. It will not only make women feel healthier, but it will empower them to live a more fulfilling life.

Actress, filmmaker, writer and director Angela Shelton is an eight-year user of the product.

She said the first time she used the Softcup, it felt weird, but now she refuses to use anything else.

“It doesn’t involve any acrobat action to put it into your cervix. And once it’s in, you don’t even feel it.

“I’m very much an outdoor person, I love to hike and run. Now, I can be active for 12 hours straight without worrying.” Angela says she started using the Softcup because her friend had contracted TSS.

“I’ve left a tampon in a glass for two hours and was shocked to see how dirty the water had become.

“Can you imagine what had been going into your body?” The Softcup will be available here soon.

JAKARTA: The outgoing chief of Indonesia’s Supreme Court on Friday denied corruption was rife at the highest level of the country’s judicial system, despite a slew of disputed decisions and graft allegations.

Bagir Manan, 67, retired from the nation’s top judicial post after a seven-year stint amid two ongoing cases into bribes and embezzlement involving court officials.

The powerful Corruption Eradication Commission in June launched an investigation into the alleged embezzlement of court fees. The probe included the examination of a personal bank account belonging to Manan.

Manan has also reportedly been named in a court case as the intended recipient of bribes that were allegedly handed to court staff in 2005 by businessman Probosutedjo, a step-brother of former dictator Suharto.

“Those accusations that I have received bribes don’t make sense at all and no one has ever proven that I’ve taken a bribe,” Manan told foreign journalists at a meeting to mark his retirement.

“In the Supreme Court, up to this day not… a single one of my judges has been put on trial.”

Indonesia’s Supreme Court is widely seen as tangled up in the institutionalised corruption that is rife throughout country’s the court system. It has been criticised for a series of baffling decisions.

In 2007, the court awarded 100 million dollars in libel damages to former dictator Suharto over a Time magazine article alleging massive corruption. That decision is being appealed.

It also cut to 10 years an initial 15-year sentence handed in 2002 to Suharto’s playboy youngest son, Hutomo “Tommy” Mandala Putra, for a range of crimes including the murder of a Supreme Court judge.

However, Manan said the Supreme Court had been leading the charge in reforming Indonesia’s judiciary and was cleaning up the murky practices of the lower courts.

Judges and court staff have been given extra training and increased salaries, while those found to have broken the law have been severely punished, he said.

“It’s hard for me to say it, but there are a lot of corrupt judges, that can be established. But we’re not closed to the possibility that bribery happens at the lower courts, bribery happens in the appeals courts,” Manan said.

Indonesia is ranked as the world’s 126th most corrupt country on Berlin-based watchdog Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index, on a level pegging with countries including Uganda, Libya and Ethiopia.

The group’s local chapter ranks the judiciary as one of the most corrupt institutions in the country.
